Bells have become part of the trappings of wedding ceremonies. They are a symbol of creative power. As an object suspended between heaven and earth the bell has acquired a mystic significance of objects suspended between heaven and earth. Typically they are rung in order to help us transition from the earthly to the spiritual. They summon us to prayer or else they are a means to call our attention to something that needs our immediate attention. Love surrounding bells dates back to ancient Egypt, where farmers put them round animals’ necks to ward off the evil spirits. Europeans have a long tradition of hanging bells out of doors for good luck.

They are a reminder of their vows. According to an Irish tradition when the couple argue, one person rings the bell in order to restore harmony. It is not uncommon for guests to ring bells at a wedding in order to invite the couple to seal their vows with a kiss. The cheerful pealing of bells adds to the atmosphere of celebration as it generates a sense of joy and harmony.
